Mediterranean Cruises: How to See Italy, Spain and Greece Without the Stress

Mediterranean coastal scenery

 CRUISES   MEDITERRANEAN

A Mediterranean cruise lets you unpack once and wake up somewhere new: pasta in Italy one day, tapas in Spain the next.

It’s one of the easiest ways to see multiple countries. This guide covers the best time to go, the top ports, the questions people ask before booking, and a sample 7-night itinerary.

Best time
May, June, and September

Sample trip
7 nights, Barcelona to Rome

Best for
Culture, food, and several countries in one trip

 Top destinations and activities

  • Barcelona, Spain: Gaudí architecture, food markets, and beaches.
  • Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy: The Colosseum and Vatican. Ports are about 80 minutes from the city, so plan transport.
  • Florence and Pisa (Livorno), Italy: Renaissance art and the Leaning Tower.
  • Santorini and Mykonos, Greece: White-washed villages and sunsets.
  • Marseille and Nice, France: Markets and Riviera views.

 Questions people ask before booking

When should I go?

May, June, and September are the sweet spot: good weather and smaller crowds than July and August. Peak summer is hot, busy, and often sold out early.

Is it too rushed?

Port days are short. Pick one or two must-sees per stop rather than trying to do everything.

Is it expensive?

The cruise fare covers your room, meals, and travel between cities, which can make it a good value compared with booking hotels and trains yourself. Excursions, food ashore, and flights add up, so plan for them.

How do I get around?

Many ports are walkable. For big sights, book a ship tour or a private driver so you’re never at risk of missing departure.

Do I need to arrive early?

Yes. Arrive a day or two before your cruise so a delayed flight doesn’t mean a missed ship. I can also book a hotel for those extra nights, with Fora perks at select partner hotels.

Sample 7-night itinerary: Barcelona to Rome

  • Day 1: Barcelona. Board in the evening. If you can, arrive a day early to see La Sagrada Família.
  • Day 2: At sea. Relax and get your bearings.
  • Day 3: Marseille or Provence, France. Old Port and local markets.
  • Day 4: Genoa or Portofino, Italy. Colorful harbor towns and fresh pesto.
  • Day 5: Florence/Pisa (Livorno), Italy. Choose Florence for art or Pisa for a quick visit.
  • Day 6: Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy. Colosseum and Vatican, or a laid-back day with pasta and gelato.
  • Day 7: Naples or Sorrento area. Pompeii or the Amalfi Coast, depending on the stop.
  • Day 8: Disembark.

Sample only. Actual itineraries differ by cruise line.
