Questions people ask before booking
When is the best time?
Summer (roughly May through August) has the best weather and long daylight. September and later bring northern lights chances but cooler temperatures.
What should I pack?
Layers, a waterproof jacket, and comfortable walking shoes. Weather can shift quickly.
Is it cold?
Mild in summer, but often cooler and damp on deck. Bring a hat and gloves for scenic sailing.
Will the ship fit in the fjords?
Some tiny fjord ports only allow small ships or tender boats, so check which stops are actually docked and which are tendered.
What about Russia?
Baltic itineraries no longer include Saint Petersburg, and cruise lines have added other stops.
Sample 7-night Norway fjords itinerary
- Day 1: Embark (Southampton, Amsterdam, or Bergen, depending on the sailing).
- Day 2: At sea. Enjoy the scenery from the deck.
- Day 3: Stavanger. Options include a fjord cruise or a hike to Pulpit Rock.
- Day 4: Bergen. Colorful Bryggen wharf, the fish market, and a funicular ride for city views.
- Day 5: Flåm. Take the famous scenic train ride through mountains and waterfalls.
- Day 6: Geiranger. UNESCO-listed fjord, waterfalls, and hairpin roads. Best seen from the water.
- Day 7: At sea or Ålesund. Art Nouveau town, if included.
- Day 8: Disembark.
