TRAVEL ADVISOR TIPS
Planning a trip can start to feel like a part-time job. Dozens of open tabs, reviews that contradict each other, and that nagging question at the end: did I pick the right place?
If you’ve ever thought, “there has to be an easier way,” that’s exactly where a travel advisor comes in. Here’s what it actually looks like when you plan a trip with me.
Disclosure: This site contains affiliate links. I am also a certified Fora Travel Advisor and may be compensated by hotel and cruise partners when you book through me, at no extra cost to you. Opinions are my own.
How It Works, Start to Finish
Step 1: Tell Me Your Dream Trip
Share where you’d like to go, your rough dates, how many people are coming, and a budget range if you’d like. A hotel getaway, a cruise, or a run-cation all work. A rough idea is plenty, and asking costs nothing.
Step 2: I Do the Research
This is the part that eats up your evenings, so I take it off your plate. I compare options and narrow them down to a short list that fits your travel style, instead of a hundred browser tabs.
Step 3: You Choose, I Book
Once you pick the option that feels right, I handle the booking. As a certified Fora Travel Advisor, I can often offer Fora client rates and perks at select partner hotels. Rates and perks vary by hotel and by date, so I confirm exactly what applies to your trip.
Step 4: I’m Still Here After You Book
Booking isn’t the finish line. Flights shift, dates move, or something unexpected comes up. With a real person on your side, you have support before your trip and while you travel, so you’re not stuck on hold trying to sort it out alone. How much on-trip support you get depends on the service you choose, and I’ll explain it up front.
Does It Cost Extra?
Simple hotel and cruise bookings are free. There’s no planning fee when you book a hotel stay or a cruise through me. For fuller custom itinerary planning, a planning fee applies. Send me an inquiry and I’ll share the planning fee details. Either way, I’ll tell you exactly what applies before you decide.
Why Perks Come With an Advisor
When you book a hotel through a big online booking site, the hotel typically pays that site a commission. Hotels that partner with advisors often add extras for those guests instead, like breakfast, resort or dining credits, welcome amenities, or an upgrade when available. These perks vary by hotel and by date, and I’ll always tell you what applies to your stay.
Another thing I check for you: whether your stay can still earn hotel loyalty points and elite night credit. Bookings made through hotel advisor programs often can, but not every hotel or program allows it, so I confirm before I book.
I won’t promise you a lower price on every trip. Sometimes the rate is the same one you’d see online, and the real value is in the extras and having someone in your corner. Some credit card travel programs offer great perks too, so it’s worth comparing. If you’d like, I’ll lay the options side by side for your trip.
The VIP Ladder: Why Advisors Rank Higher at Check-In
Behind the scenes, hotels tend to treat reservations differently depending on how they were booked. Every property runs things its own way, but this is the general pattern many hotels follow when handing out upgrades and extras. The wider the bar, the more priority.

HIGHEST PRIORITY
Travel Advisors With Hotel Partner Programs
Advisors connected to partner programs like Virtuoso, Hyatt Privé, and the wider Fora hotel network tend to land at the top. A real person with a relationship to the hotel team can speak up for you, sometimes before you arrive. To a hotel, an advisor is a steady source of repeat business, so upgrades and extras are often handled by hand.
Premium Credit Card Portals
Programs like Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts or Chase’s travel portal apply set perks automatically. They can be genuinely good, but they run through large automated systems, without a person advocating for you at the property.
Booking Direct
Booking straight with the hotel at the public rate keeps you in the brand’s loyalty program, but there’s no third party to ask for VIP treatment on your behalf.
USUALLY LOWEST PRIORITY
Third-Party Online Bookings
When you book it yourself through a third-party online booking site, the hotel typically pays that site a commission, which leaves less room for extras like breakfast, property credits, or upgrades. Booking on your own is a perfectly fine choice. It’s just last on the list when it comes to priority for perks.
This is a general pattern, not a guarantee. Every hotel has its own system, and perks vary by property and by date, so I always confirm what applies to your stay.
What that ladder means for you:
- Same rate, extra perks: Hotels generally don’t list the same room for less on one site than another. Instead of discounting, they often layer extras onto advisor bookings, like breakfast, credits, or an upgrade when available.
- Someone to speak up: If a hotel is overbooked, a booking with a real advocate behind it is less likely to be treated as the easy one to move. I can reach out to the property on your behalf, before you arrive.
- A human safety net: When a flight is canceled or plans get disrupted, you have a real person to turn to instead of waiting on hold with a call center. How much on-trip support is included depends on the service you choose, and I’ll explain it up front.
Questions I Hear a Lot
Does it cost more to book with an advisor?
For a simple hotel or cruise booking, there’s no planning fee. I’m paid through commission from the hotels and cruise lines, and prices and perks vary by property and by date, so I’ll show you exactly what’s available before you decide. Fuller custom planning does have a planning fee. Send me an inquiry and I’ll share the details.
Can’t I just book online (or ask an AI tool to plan it)?
You absolutely can, and for a simple trip that might be all you need. Where an advisor helps is everything around the booking: comparing options with your preferences in mind, answering questions as they come up, and having a real person to turn to if plans change. If you’d rather skip the research and the worrying, that’s where I come in.
How early should I reach out?
It depends on the trip. Popular destinations, peak seasons, and big events like marathon weekends can book up, so reaching out sooner gives you more choices. A simple hotel getaway usually has more flexibility. Not sure? Send me the details and I’ll tell you what timeline makes sense.
Aren’t all travel advisors the same?
Not at all. Advisors have different strengths and different styles. My focus is curated stays, cruises, and run-cations. The best match is someone who understands how you like to travel, so don’t be shy about asking questions before you decide.
Is a Travel Advisor Right for You?
Working with an advisor tends to be a great fit if:
- You’d rather spend your time looking forward to the trip than researching it
- You want a real person to answer your questions and give you options you can trust
- You like knowing someone has your back if plans change
- You’re interested in hotel perks and rates you might not find on your own
And if you love the research and just want a second opinion, that’s welcome too. Planning should feel like the start of the adventure, not a chore before it.
Ready to Start?
If a trip is on your mind, whether it’s a boutique hotel, a cruise, or a run-cation, I’d love to hear about it. Send me the details and I’ll come back to you with options, plus planning fee details if you’d like fuller custom planning. There is no cost or obligation to ask.
Thank you for your response. ✨
Prefer to Cruise? Let’s Plan It Together
If a cruise sounds better than a hotel stay, I can book that too. Unpack once, wake up somewhere new, and enjoy Fora cruise perks such as onboard credit, upgrades, priority boarding, and specialty dining at select partners (perks vary by cruise line, and promotions change often).
