The Holiday Trip Planning Timeline: When to Book and What to Have Ready

The holidays have a way of sneaking up on all of us. One minute it’s October, and the next you’re wondering whether you’ve waited too long to book that cozy winter getaway.

Good news: a little timing goes a long way. Travel industry research points to clear booking windows for getting better prices and better availability. I’m a certified Fora Travel Advisor, and I’ve pulled the key timelines together so you don’t have to spend hours digging for them.

Big Trips: Start Dreaming 12 to 18 Months Out

For a major international trip, a complex itinerary, or a popular destination, it pays to start researching more than a year ahead. That gives you time to learn the seasonal weather patterns, understand when prices rise and fall, and secure the hotels and experiences that fill up early.

Flights and Hotels: Book About 6 Months Ahead

Once you’ve chosen your destination, aim to book your flights and main accommodations at least six months before you leave. That window tends to strike a nice balance: better airfare, more hotel choices, and plenty of time to arrange travel insurance.

Holiday Travel Plays by Different Rules

Thanksgiving and Christmas are peak travel times, and airlines know it. The research suggests the sweet spots look like this:

  • Thanksgiving: The lowest prices tend to show up around 34 days before departure, with a good window running from about 21 to 57 days out. That makes October the most cost-effective month to book Thanksgiving flights.
  • Christmas: The lowest prices tend to show up around 56 days before departure, with a good window running from about 33 to 67 days out. That points to late October through early November as prime time to lock in Christmas travel.

In other words, if you’re planning to travel for the holidays, the time to act is now, not later.

Small Moves That Can Save You Money

  • Fly on weekdays. Departing and returning on weekdays instead of weekends can cut costs by up to 14%.
  • Set price alerts early. Watching prices ahead of time helps you buy when the fare drops into your target range.
  • Consider a layover. Nonstop is convenient, but a connecting flight can mean real savings during busy holiday windows.

Not Sure Where to Go? Start Here

If you’re still choosing a destination, these are some popular picks for holiday travel. Each one comes with a hotel worth a look and a link to browse tours and activities:

Don’t Forget the Paperwork

The best deal in the world doesn’t help if your passport isn’t ready. Take a few minutes to check these before you book:

  • Passports: Many countries require at least six months of validity beyond your travel dates, so check the expiration date for everyone in your group.
  • Visas and entry rules: Requirements vary by destination, so look them up early.
  • Travel insurance: I strongly recommend it, especially for holiday trips where weather and delays can throw a wrench in things.

Your Quick Timeline

  1. 12 to 18 months out: Research big or international trips.
  2. About 6 months out: Book flights and main hotels.
  3. October: Book Thanksgiving flights.
  4. Late October to early November: Book Christmas travel.
  5. Anytime: Check passports and line up travel insurance.
